Twenty Eight Hours Missing

“Who the hell comes to Key West and eats bbq?” Denny asked, her face twisting up into a mask of disgust and confusion. It had been a few hours since I’d heard Denny’s story; just enough time to catch a quick nap and get the woman up to speed on what I had learned about Crystal Reed and where she would be. It was strange to have her sitting here next to me. Usually, when I did stuff like this, I was on my own. Finding people was, for the most part, a solitary endeavor. Still, Denny had her own goals for this, and it wasn’t like I could cut her out. Even if I refused to work with her on this, I had little doubt she wouldn’t go about an investigation herself. She had a theoretical Pulitzer riding on it, after all. No. It was better to keep her underfoot, to know where she was and what she was up to. In situations like this, you wanted as few variables as possible, and Denny Wilder would have been a huge variable.

“Not a BBQ fan?” I asked, looking over at her from the front seat of my car. We had been sitting here at Dukes for about an hour now, hoping that Faith Robinson’s former best friend might show up early. She had not, and the twelve o’clock meeting time was now upon us. I kept my eyes peeled for the woman to walk across the parking lot, but as of yet, I hadn’t seen her.

“BBQ is fine, but we’re in the Keys. The freshest fish in the world is here. You don’t go to Italy and ask for the cheeseburger,” she muttered.

“People are weird about seafood,” I muttered. “A lot of them just don’t know how to stomach it.”

“I guess so,” she said. “I feel sorry for them. There aren’t many things in life I enjoy more than good seafood.” She sighed. “It’s almost fifteen after twelve. Are you sure she’s coming?”

“No,” I replied, shaking my head. “I’m sure she was coming. After yesterday, I’m not sure of anything about her. If you’re right, and Faith did orchestrate the disappearance herself, it stands to reason that Crystal is the person who helped her with it. Crystal being here at the same time all of this happened is too big a coincidence to be real. I’m sure they were in contact with each other before the disappearance. In fact, she was probably the person who Faith was talking to the day you heard her on the phone. If that’s true, and I think it is, she could already be gone. She might be out of the state by now.” I looked down at my phone, refreshing the page I had up. “She hasn’t posted anything on any of her socials since two days ago. So, though I’m not sure she’s still coming here, this is the only lead I have.”

“Is that normally how you do that?” she asked, typing into her phone and looking over at me.
